Tips from A Girl Boss: Amanda Bossi
Talk about serendipitous. Live Salon and Beauty & Pin-Ups were a match made in hair heaven. Amanda Bossi, a true boss babe and real-life pin-up, tells it like it is when it comes to hair products and the beauty business. Just shy of 30, Bossi owns a salon in Pennsylvania and strives every day to spread beauty, confidence and empowerment. We’re kind of overwhelmed by how much everyday extraordinary is happening here.
B&P: Tell us about yourself and your business.
AB: My name is Amanda Bossi. I have been in the industry for 11 years. I knew I wanted to be in this field since I was in the 3rd grade. I never even thought of another career choice. My aunt went to beauty school later in her life and would bring me her mannequins and show me how to braid. That was the beginning of everything. There were of course people trying to talk me out of it. “How will you make money? Why don’t you go to real school?” I thank The Universe every day I never listened to them and I followed my passion. Here I am, on the cusp of turning 30 (and I’m embracing it), a successful and sought after hair stylist, and business owner.
B&P: You opened Live Salon less than a year ago. Can you tell us a little about that?
AB: I think almost every hairstylist dreams at some point to open their own salon. The thought had always seemed too daunting of a task to me. However, last year some unfortunate events happened that made me reevaluate things, and I decided to jump in without a life vest. I decided to open my own business, found a location, and in a month and a half my doors were open. Sometimes life’s challenges are a blessing in disguise and I am surely blessed. Now I have been open for almost 7 months and it is more of a success than I could have imagined.
B&P: That’s incredible! It takes a lot of drive and motivation to take a leap like that. What are some of the core values of your salon that help you keep grinding?
AB: Live Salon has a motto we live by every day: Live Beautifully, Live Confidently, & Empower. We strive to be a salon in which one can walk into after a hardship, celebration, or just because, with or without an appointment. We are all one, and if we live more beautifully, more confidently, and empower not only ourselves but others, the world will be a more beautiful place.
B&P: What was your vision for the salon?
AB: I didn’t just open Live Salon for me, but for all my clients who have been there with me through all these years, good and bad. I wanted to create a space that was comfortable – to feel like you were just relaxing at home, sharing a glass of wine, and letting go of all the days’ stress. I didn’t want my guests to feel rushed or like they were just a number or another dollar. It is almost impossible to leave any salon without a little pep in your step, but I wanted Live Salon to do more than that. I wanted my guests to feel empowered to reach their own dreams and have fabulous hair doing it.
B&P: That’s a great attitude. It’s so important to feel empowered while feeling beautiful, inside and out. What does beauty mean to you?
AB: Beauty to me means whatever you want it to be. Beauty is confidence in what you feel and believe in. Beauty is perception and doesn’t have to match everyone else’s ideas. If you feel beautiful in navy blue lipstick or in yoga pants straight from the gym, rock it. If you feel beautiful being an independent girl boss or running after your babies, get on with your bad self. Beauty is being your unique self in all your colors, shapes, and sizes, and doing what you’re happy doing.
B&P: So true!! And you get to spread that through your business, which is amazing. What is your favorite part of being a hair stylist?
AB: The relationships I get to build is my favorite part of being a hairstylist. It is amazing to be surrounded by people who love you, look to you for advice, and allow you to express yourself in them. Not only that, but by creating relationships and trust, you don’t feel so alone in the world. We get to bond over beauty and then spread that light and joy throughout the world.
B&P: What about your favorite part of being a salon owner?
AB: My favorite part of being a salon owner is finally ‘making my mark’ on the world. I get to choose what Live Salon does. I am able to drive my philanthropic efforts with the salons name in the forefront. And I am able to offer my guests the best of the best products, services, and relations.
B&P: Tell us about a typical day in Live Salon.
AB: Our days are normally booked solid and long hours. But each day is more rewarding than the last. There is always laughter and conversation, even between the guests. All life’s dramas come out in the wash. We are constantly rewarded by the instant gratification of a color change or a new cut. Not only do we get to create art, but to see our guests smile and cry out with excitement because of their new ‘do.
B&P: It sounds like you’ve had an amazing journey, and are living your truth! Who would you say has helped you most along the way?
AB: My clients most definitely were the ones who stood by me and helped me along the way. They cheered me on and gave me the motivation to create Live Salon and live out my dream. They went on this ride with me and it was like “we” created this salon. Live Salon isn’t just mine, it’s theirs. It may be my blood, sweat, and tears but it’s their reward as well. I honestly couldn’t have done it without them and their unwavering confidence in me.
B&P: It takes a village doesn’t it! Who else inspires you?
AB: I read two books right before I decided to open my salon. One was You Are A Badass by Jennifer Sincero, and the other was Girl Boss by Sophia Amoruso. Here are two women who weren’t afraid of their flaws and failures, who overcame their struggles and insanities, and told it how it was. Their books gave me the strength and courage that ultimately changed my life in a very short time. I still reread them over and over again and the pages are now covered in highlighter. Females like Sincero and Amoruso inspire me to reach higher. They also remind me that even when I falter to reach out, grab a life line, and go at it again. I feel like because of people like them, I can do anything I set my mind to if I allow myself to do it.
B&P: Adding those to our Amazon list! What’s one piece of advice you’d give to aspiring stylists and salon owners?
AB: Never give up and remember you are worth it. Don’t give up when you’re tired and your feet hurt. Don’t give up if your book isn’t always full- use the time to market yourself or improve your skills. And remember to never feel bad about charging for what your worth. You are worth fulfilling your dream, your passion, and love for your life.
B&P: Favorite Beauty & Pin-Ups product and why?
AB: Fierce. When I was first introduced to Beauty & Pin-Ups, I was handed just a can of Fierce to try. One use and I was sold. I immediately ordered the entire line to stock the salon. The hold is amazing without feeling crusty. But the smell! Oh my goodness, it is heaven in a can. Never have I used a hairspray that didn’t smell like hairspray. It I could just bottle the scent and sniff it all day long I would.
B&P: Any other fun facts we should know?
AB: I have been internationally published as a pin-up model in magazines such as Pin-Up America. I’m a crazy cat mom of four fur babies. Karaoke is my jam. People ask what gives me my runners’ high. Answer is Karaoke. I am all about those 80’s power ballads. Also, I will be doing hair and makeup for an upcoming film and you better bet B&P will be used to great all the vintage looks being recreated in the film!
