Pin-Up Profile: Jodie Garcia

Makeup artist, stylist and owner of Stage Door Makeup and Hair, Jodie Garcia has an extensive resume. From theatrical shows, such as Disney’s Camp Rock, La Cage Aux Folles, Cats, The Addams Family, Little Shop of Horrors, as well as multiple music videos, she has worked with professional photographers, editorial stylist, fashion designers, and the Neiman Marcus Fashion Show.

Jodie recently joined our education team and brings with her 30 years of experience behind the chair, behind the stage, and even on stage. When she’s not running around with Beauty & Pin-Ups or working on the set for a production, Jodie works at her salon in Southern California. She voiced a unique view of the pin-up at our training earlier this year, and we just had to hear more from her, so we sat down and discussed empowerment, beauty, and her dreams of zip-lining through a jungle.

B&P: What did you want to be when you grew up?

JG: A Veterinarian. I had almost every animal you could possibly imagine growing up and into my adulthood. During the summer, I would work with a large animal veterinarian in Iowa named Doc Spain. From there, I became a back-office tech in San Diego Veterinary Hospitals and I moved into human medicine from there. I have always loved makeup and hair, but my aunt, who was a licensed cosmetologist in Texas, told me if I chose that career she would kick my fanny. She always told me that (cosmetology) was a rewarding job, but one of the toughest physically that you could do.

B&P: What is your favorite part of your job?

JG: Connecting with people. If I can make one person smile, and see the beauty that they carry inside of them, then I have done my deed for the day. I love to be creative and to be inspired by my clientele. My favorite moments are when my guests tells me it’s designer’s choice to create a style for them. When you love what you do, it no longer becomes a job or just a place to work. It’s your passion.

B&P: Describe a typical day for you.

JG: I wouldn’t really call it a ‘typical day’ (laughs). My days are subject to change at any moment. But I do know my schedule at least a month in advance, and I sometimes have directors schedule me on set as far as a year in advance.

B&P: What are some of your biggest challenges as a stylist?

JG: Products that can’t stand up to what they advertise. I’m very skeptical when it comes to hair care, because I want the best for my clients and myself. I was overjoyed when I found Beauty & Pin-Ups because they delivered more than what they promised.

B&P: We’re so glad you like the products! Besides choosing quality products, what do you think is most important to make sure your clients have a memorable and positive experience?

JG: As a stylist my main focus is to give a healing and peaceful session to my guest. We have such busy schedules that it’s hard for most guests to take a few minutes to relax. When we finally get that moment to pamper them, we want them to naturally enjoy it. I want my guests to get positive energy from me, to take a relaxing deep breath and be able to enjoy the experience. I want them to feel the love of what I do and my passion for being a stylist. When I give them something as simple as a cut, it’s more than just a cut, it’s an experience. I always give my guest an aromatherapy neck, shoulder, and scalp de-stressing massage, followed by a nice wash house experience, followed by a deep conditioning treatment with either Fearless Hair Rescue Masque or Rewind Reconstructing Conditioner. By the time my guest is coming out from under the dryer they are energized, relaxed and renewed.

B&P: That sounds amazing! You do a lot of “pin-up style” shoots and events. What do you think draws so many women to pin-ups and vintage looks?

JG: It’s the styles and how it makes you feel. The clothing never goes out of style. You can dress it up or dress it down to fit any occasion. The hairstyles are classic and sexy, even playful. You can have your hair up in a bandana with cute bangs, sun dress and sandals and you have a fun easy look without fuss. Today’s hairstyles are based on years past. It evolves, renews and revamps.

B&P: What lead you to a vintage style?

JG: I fell in love with shoes when I was really young. I met a woman named Mrs. Ketchersid when I was 5 or 6 years old and she was in her late 70’s. She had the most amazing collection of shoes that she started collecting back in the 1920’s. We would go and visit her and she would let me try them on. Lucille Ball was another inspiration for me. She was gorgeous, funny, fashion forward, and sexy without being overdone. Lucille Ball in my mind was stunning, beautiful, bubbly and full of life. Marilyn Monroe was an exquisite and beautiful woman as well.

B&P: What does your beauty routine look like?

JG: Step one is keeping as much stress out of my life as possible! I also do salt facial scrubs daily to rejuvenate the elasticity in my skin and moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. I’m very passionate about hair care products. My hair is my advertisement and an extension of my personality. If I’m having a bad hair day, well lets just say… it’s not a good day for me. I don’t have time to stop and touch up during the day, so it’s really important for me to have products that can keep up with my schedule and my lifestyle, as well as stand up to any test that I may throw its way, so Fierce Firm Hold Finishing Spray is my best friend.

B&P: And your favorite beauty tip?

JG: Living a clean, healthy life. Your body is the only one you get….Use clean, healthy products without chemicals. That is one of the reasons that I’m so passionate about Beauty & Pin-Ups.

B&P: Tell us about the most beautiful moment of your life. Interpret how to answer this question as you like!

JG: Seeing my parents’ love in their eyes for one another. My parents met in 1955 and have been married 62 years this June. When they first met, my mom had come from Iowa to visit her sister in California, and my dad had just been transferred to San Diego after returning from being stationed in Korea. My mom had given herself two weeks to find a job or she was going back to Iowa. My mom’s sister told her that she needed to get out and have some fun and invited her to the USO dance. My dad’s buddy talked my Dad into going as well, despite his protests. They met there and it was instant for them. They were married in less than three months. It’s beautiful to watch my parents walk hand-in-hand down the street or when they are out and sitting my Dad puts his arm around her. Those are the most beautiful moments that fill my heart with so much love and admiration.

B&P: When do you feel most beautiful?

JG: When I’m all dolled up in my favorite outfit. When you take a step forward and your shoulders are back and you are confident in the skin you are in.

B&P: What does pin-up mean to you?

JG: Timeless, classic, sexy, beautiful…every woman is a pin-up. It’s more than a word, it’s how you feel from the inside. It’s a part of you that no one can touch. It’s strength and confidence. When a woman feels beautiful she can do anything. Her shoulders are back, her back is straight, she shows determination and can move any mountain she has in her way. Women are made of many different layers like a rose. We are not only daughters, sisters, mothers, friends. We are CEO’s of our own life. We are go-getter’s. We are fighters. We have strength beyond our own knowledge that will carry us through anything with dignity, grace and integrity. A pin-up is not gender specific. A pin-up is not confined by size, shape or color. The pin-up is about who we are within.

B&P: Speed round!

Favorite food: Caramel! You can bribe me to do anything as long as caramel is involved (laughs).

Favorite color: Teal, Purple, Pink and Black.

Favorite book: Lincoln by Bill O’Reilly.

One sentence that best describes you: Angelic with a touch of feistiness.

Favorite movie: I have two favorite movies. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (original) and The Notebook.

Dream vacation: Zip-lining through a jungle, or on a beach somewhere.

All-time favorite pin-up: Lucille Ball.

A fun, random fact about you: I want to live in a tree house.

Who or what inspires you? My family inspires me so much. Other artists and my clients. If I can dream it, I can do it.
